![]() ![]() I don't know very much about T3 modding because I don't usually do it. I'm not sure you're likely to need savegames for the earlier titles AFAIK, the patches for the first two games are fine. If all you have are the Steam versions, chase down the fan patches. GOG prepackages everything together so it all just runs without crashing or garbage graphics/nonsensical colors. Someone out there apparently has source code to the Dark engine, and worked for free to make major improvements over the original releases for both games. The GOG versions will probably be the best, overall they come with the community patches, which is terribly important to get them running on modern machines. A lot of the situations in 2 are direct continuations of the prior game. That's probably fairly realistic, given what you're doing in the game, but I thought 1 and 2 had a much better play feel to them, no matter how unreasonable they might be compared to reality.ĭo play 1 and 2 in order. The engine in 3 was pretty clunky, and your character feels weirdly clumsy a lot of the time. The graphics in the earlier games are tremendously inferior to the third, but I think you'll find that they actually play a fair bit better. Within that universe, what happens makes sense, but if you don't know the setup, it would probably be fairly odd. The plot in DS would probably seem less strange if you'd gone through the first two games. The first two Thief games are also in my backlog, so I'm looking forward to playing those as well. Still, it was a game worth experiencing and I'm glad I had enough patience to persevere despite the snafu. The one caveat that made me want to bang my head is that the game kept crashing in the same place in one of the last missions (based on other feedback it seems pretty common for saves to become corrupted), so I eventually had to use someone else's save file to complete the game. If you don't mind graphics and mechanics that feel a bit dated, I think the gameplay overall still holds up fairly well if you have the Sneaky Upgrade patch installed. ![]() Save for one particularly frustrating level that I ended up using a walkthrough for and a surprisingly easy final mission, I liked the balance in the difficulty - not too challenging but still satisfying to beat (I played on normal). Though the plot was kind of strange and nonsensical, I think most of the missions were well thought out and varied enough in their design to keep things interesting. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games Listĭespite being an older game, I really enjoyed taking my time with this one and had a lot of fun sneaking around in the shadows, stealing loot, and generally being stealthy.
